10 Tips for Preparing Your Toddler for a Family Photoshoot
If you’re worried your toddler won’t sit still for a family photoshoot, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of the first things parents say to me before a session.
The good news? I don’t expect toddlers to stand still, smile at the camera or behave perfectly. In fact, the best photographs usually happen when they don’t.
Here are my top tips for helping your session feel as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.
1. Don’t Tell Them They Have to Smile
Children often feel pressure when they’re asked to “say cheese”. Instead, simply tell them you’re going on an adventure or meeting someone who’ll play games with them.
2. Avoid Bribes
It can be tempting to promise sweets if they behave, but this often means they’re thinking about the reward rather than enjoying the experience.
Instead, let them explore, laugh and simply be themselves.
3. Make Sure They’re Well Rested
A well-rested toddler is usually a much happier toddler. If possible, try to avoid scheduling anything too busy before your session.
4. Bring a Few Essentials
A favourite teddy, a drink, some simple snacks and wipes can make all the difference if they’re needed.
5. Dress Them Comfortably
Choose clothes they can run, climb and cuddle in. If they’re constantly adjusting an outfit or uncomfortable in new shoes, it’ll show.
6. Trust the Process
You don’t need to apologise if your child is shy, energetic or full of beans.
I’ve photographed children who never stopped running, refused to look at the camera or wanted to be carried for the entire session—and their galleries were still beautiful.
7. Let Them Be Curious
Some of the sweetest moments happen when children stop to pick flowers, collect sticks or investigate a ladybird.
Those little moments are childhood.
8. Don’t Worry About Dirt
Grass stains, sandy toes and muddy knees are all part of growing up. Outdoor family photography is about embracing real life, not avoiding it.
9. Focus on Each Other
Your job isn’t to watch me.
Talk to your children, cuddle them, tickle them, swing them between you or simply hold their hand.
The connection between your family is what creates the magic.
10. Remember Why You’re Here
Years from now, your children won’t notice whether their hair was perfect or whether they smiled in every photograph.
They’ll remember the way you looked at them, held them close and loved them.
Those are the moments worth preserving.
