A Golden Hour Maternity Photoshoot in North Cave, East Yorkshire

There is something especially beautiful about photographing the final weeks before a baby arrives.

Pregnancy can feel all-consuming while you’re living through it—the appointments, the waiting, the tiny movements and the wondering who this little person might become. Yet once your baby is here, that chapter suddenly feels incredibly brief.

A maternity photoshoot gives you a way to hold onto it.

This recent golden-hour maternity session took place in the countryside surrounding North Cave, East Yorkshire. With its long grasses, open skies and soft evening light, it was the perfect setting for relaxed, natural photographs celebrating this fleeting season of motherhood.

Golden-Hour Maternity Photography in East Yorkshire

Golden hour is the period towards the end of the day when the sun sits lower in the sky and the light becomes softer and warmer.

It brings a gentle, dreamlike quality to photographs—glowing light through the trees, beautifully backlit grasses and those gorgeous hazy tones that make everything feel a little magical.

It’s one of my favourite times to photograph maternity sessions because the light complements the quiet anticipation of pregnancy so beautifully. There is no harsh midday sun and no need for a studio full of equipment. Just an evening outdoors, space to breathe and time to celebrate everything that is about to change.

Session times vary throughout the year. Summer photographs may take place later in the evening, while autumn and spring sessions begin earlier as the sun sets. Once we’ve chosen your date, I’ll recommend the best time for the light and keep a close eye on the weather as your session approaches.

Why North Cave Is So Beautiful for Maternity Photographs

North Cave and the surrounding East Yorkshire countryside offer so much natural variety without the setting ever overpowering the people in the photographs.

Open fields, winding paths, tall grasses and pockets of evening light create a timeless backdrop that feels peaceful and unforced. The countryside changes with every season too—from fresh greens and blossom in spring to wild grasses in summer and warmer, earthy tones as autumn arrives.

Outdoor sessions also give us the freedom to move.

Rather than remaining in one position and feeling as though you need to “perform” for the camera, we can walk, talk and make the most of the landscape. That movement helps everything feel much more natural, particularly if you’re nervous about being photographed.

“But I Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera”

Almost everybody tells me this before their session.

You don’t need to know how to pose, and I won’t leave you standing in a field wondering what you’re supposed to do with your hands.

I’ll gently guide you into positions that feel comfortable and photograph beautifully, but there will also be plenty of movement. We might walk through the grass, pause in the evening light or simply give you a moment to connect with your baby.

My approach is relaxed and encouraging. The aim isn’t to turn you into somebody else or create photographs that feel overly staged. It’s to help you feel comfortable enough that the finished images still feel unmistakably like you.

Including Your Partner and Children

Maternity photographs don’t have to focus solely on the person carrying the baby.

Partners and children are warmly welcomed because this is a significant chapter for the whole family. These sessions can capture the way your family looks before somebody new arrives—the cuddles, laughter, little hands resting on your bump and the excitement of becoming a big brother or sister.

If you bring your family, we’ll create a mixture of photographs together alongside some portraits of you by yourself.

Children don’t need to sit perfectly still or smile on command. My sessions are child-led, with plenty of opportunities to explore, play and cuddle. Their genuine reactions and little in-between moments often create the photographs families treasure most.

Well-behaved dogs can come too, because they’re part of your family story as well.

What Should You Wear for an Outdoor Maternity Session?

The most important thing is choosing something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful.

Soft fabrics, natural textures and dresses with a little movement photograph wonderfully outdoors. Neutral and earthy colours sit beautifully against the East Yorkshire landscape, but that doesn’t mean you have to avoid colour completely. Muted floral prints, warm shades and soft seasonal colours can all work beautifully.

You also don’t need to dress in a way that feels unlike you simply because you’re having maternity photographs taken.

Once your session is booked, you’ll receive my preparation and styling guide, and I’m always happy to help you choose between outfit ideas. If your partner or children are joining you, I can also advise on creating a coordinated colour palette without making everybody match.

When Should You Book Your Maternity Photoshoot?

For most pregnancies, I recommend arranging your maternity session for around 28 to 34 weeks.

At this stage, your bump is usually beautifully defined while you’re hopefully still comfortable enough to enjoy an outdoor session. Every pregnancy is different, though, so we can choose the timing that feels best for you.

I recommend getting in touch after your 20-week scan—or earlier if you already know you would love maternity photographs—as weekend and golden-hour dates can book several weeks in advance.

If you’re booking an outdoor session, there’s no need to worry about predicting the East Yorkshire weather months ahead. I’ll monitor the forecast closer to the time and, if the weather genuinely isn’t on our side, we’ll rearrange.

From Maternity to Newborn

A maternity session preserves the anticipation—the bump, the waiting and your family just before everything changes.

A newborn session captures what comes next. The tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, first cuddles and the beginning of life with the little person you’ve been waiting to meet.

My New Beginnings Collection brings both chapters together, including a maternity session, a relaxed newborn session and 30 beautifully edited digital images from each.

Individually, maternity sessions are £249, while the complete New Beginnings Collection is £479, offering a saving compared with booking the two sessions separately.

Maternity Photography in North Cave and East Yorkshire

I photograph natural, heartfelt maternity sessions throughout North Cave, Hessle, Beverley and the surrounding East Yorkshire villages.

If you’re expecting a baby and would love photographs filled with soft light, genuine connection and a touch of nostalgia, I would be honoured to document this chapter for you.

One day, your bump will be gone and the baby you were waiting for will be running ahead of you through these same fields.

But you’ll always have the photographs that remember how it all began.
