There’s something extra special about photographing a new chapter of somebody’s life in a place that already holds so many memories.
For Jade and Michael’s maternity session, we headed to Weel, just outside Beverley in East Yorkshire — the village where Jade grew up.
Rather than simply choosing a beautiful location for their photographs, we were photographing them somewhere that already meant something to her. And with their baby soon to arrive, it felt particularly lovely to come back to a place connected to Jade’s own childhood to document the beginning of theirs.
A maternity session somewhere meaningful
I love beautiful locations, obviously, but I think photographs become even more valuable when the place has a story attached to it.
We spent the evening wandering around Weel, making the most of the countryside and that soft end-of-day light. The session was relaxed and unhurried — lots of walking, talking, laughing and those quieter little moments between Jade and Michael while they wait to meet their baby.
My maternity sessions aren’t about knowing how to pose or performing for the camera. I’ll give you little prompts and gentle direction when you need it, but mostly I want you to spend some time together and let me capture what happens naturally.
Golden hour maternity photography near Beverley
We photographed the session in the evening, when the light was becoming softer and warmer.
It’s exactly why I love photographing maternity sessions around golden hour. There’s a softness to the light that works beautifully with the countryside and gives photographs that warm, nostalgic feeling I’m always drawn to.
And locations like Weel are a lovely reminder that you don’t necessarily need a famous beauty spot for gorgeous photographs.
Sometimes the best location is somewhere completely personal to you — the village you grew up in, somewhere you walk regularly, the countryside near your home, or simply a place that feels like yours.
From her childhood to theirs
I think this is probably my favourite thing about this particular gallery.
Jade has memories of growing up here, and now she has photographs taken in the same place while waiting to become a mum herself.
One day their baby will be able to look back at photographs of their parents here, before they had even met them.
And that’s really what photographs are for.
Not just documenting what you looked like, but keeping little pieces of your story.
This also isn’t the last time I’ll be photographing Jade and Michael. Their maternity session is part of my New Beginnings maternity and newborn collection, so once their little one arrives, we’ll get to capture the next part too.
