One of the questions I’m asked more than any other is, “What should we wear?” The good news is that choosing outfits doesn’t have to be stressful. The right clothing simply helps keep the focus on what matters most – your family and the connection you share.

Choose Soft, Neutral Colours

Creams, beiges, soft blues, sage greens, muted pinks and warm earthy tones photograph beautifully outdoors. These colours complement the natural surroundings and create timeless images you’ll still love years from now.

You don’t all need to wear the same colour. Instead, choose a palette of two or three complementary shades that work well together.

Think Texture Rather Than Pattern

Linen, cotton, knitwear and muslin add lovely texture without distracting from your faces. Large logos, bright neon colours and busy patterns can pull attention away from the moments we’re capturing.

Dress for the Season

Flowing dresses, linen shirts and lightweight fabrics work perfectly in the summer months, while chunky knit jumpers, boots and layered outfits create a cosy feel for autumn sessions.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. If you’re constantly adjusting your clothes, it will show in your photographs.

Keep Children Comfortable

Happy children make for relaxed photographs. Choose outfits they can move, play and explore in, and make sure shoes are suitable for walking through fields or woodland if we’re outdoors.

Bringing a spare outfit for younger children is always a great idea too!

Coordinate – Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Coordinating colours creates a much more natural, elegant look while allowing everyone’s personality to shine through.

Mum Comes First

As mums, we’re often the ones organising everything while worrying the most about how we’ll look. Choose something that makes you feel like yourself. Long dresses with movement often photograph beautifully, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident.

I’ll Help Every Step of the Way

You don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Every family who books with me is welcome to send outfit ideas before their session. I’m always happy to help you choose colours or decide between outfits.

My goal is for you to arrive feeling relaxed, knowing everything has already been taken care of.

If you’re looking for a relaxed family photographer in East Yorkshire, I’d love to help capture this season of your family’s story. Whether you’re booking your first photoshoot or returning for another year of memories, together we’ll create timeless photographs you’ll treasure for years to come.
